Developing embryos are subject to two opposing morphogenetic influences that together determine the differentiation and location of cell fates. One is a self-limiting mechanism that prohibits development of cells in areas not directly exposed to a morphogen, while the other is a morphogen-dependent mechanism that ensures that only cells in the correct location receive an appropriate signal to differentiate. In previous work, we have shown that the spatial patterning of specific developmental pathways and the nature of their interactions can be quantitatively modelled using a mechanism of homeostatic coupling that acts via two positive feedback loops. Each of the two loops represents the positive signal-receptor-signal pathway, while the homeostatic coupling represents the mechanism of back-diffusion. In the current work, we have investigated the stability of the self-limiting/self-correcting mechanism in the presence of two-pathway interactions. We find that, for a particular choice of parameters, a cell-fate pattern can be generated by mutual differentiation of the two pathways. The analysis demonstrates how the cell-fate pattern can be the result of a competition between two pathways, and highlights the conditions under which this competition is expected to occur.
